TT1516, Week 21
Guest review by Steve Willett. Thanks!
We played on two tables so not all the notes here are comprehensive.
First Yang played Dave Howe and elected to play his high looped returns game. Dave responded by not attacking and an attritional game ensued with Yang prevailing.
Meanwhile Natalie was playing what must have been her best game and was 2-2 and in the final game held her nerve against experienced and 80% plus opponent Peter Armes to win 12-10 in a tense match.
Steve overcame John Colvin mainly by starving John of his formidable forehand shots.
So 3-0 at this stage, however Peter then beat Yang in three to make the score 3-1 overall. Steve then played consistent table tennis to triumph over Peter by three games to one. Dave then beat Natalie 3-0, and Yang despatched John by the same score, making the running score 5-2 to the Defiants. Natalie then took a 2-0 lead over John but could not quite "get over the line" as John found excellent form on both his back and forehand to win 3-2. Steve could not quite come to terms with Dave’s rotation of his bat to and from the “pimple” side although he did take a game off him. So 5-4 going into the doubles with Yang and Natalie playing, however they were well beaten by John and Peter to finish the evening at 5-5 overall.
A good night’s table tennis with a result of 5-5 which I venture to say we
would have taken at the start of the night!
